The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Motunrayo Olaniyi, for allegedly stabbing his 25-year-old wife, Olajumoke, to death before setting her body on fire in their home. The tragic incident occurred on Friday, at approximately 1:00 p.m., at Amazing Grace Estate in Elepe, Ikorodu.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the case to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday. He revealed that the Ikorodu Police Division had received a distress call regarding a domestic altercation between the newlywed couple.

“A distress call was received at Ikorodu Division that a newlywed couple allegedly engaged in a domestic scuffle in their room, and in the process, the husband stabbed the wife to death,” Mr Hundeyin explained.

He further stated that after stabbing his wife, Mr Olaniyi locked her in their room, set it ablaze, and inflicted minor stab wounds on himself.

Upon receiving the report, detectives from the Ikorodu Division arrived at the scene where the fire had already been extinguished. Tragically, the lifeless body of Olajumoke was found on the floor, bearing stab wounds to her abdomen. Mr Olaniyi was rescued with injuries and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment before being discharged and placed into police custody.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect stabbed his wife during an altercation and gave himself the mild stabs,” Mr Hundeyin said.

The victim’s body has been transferred to the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue for an autopsy, while investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
