Chelsea are set to be fined £50,000 by the Football Association (FA) following their 1-1 Premier League draw with Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The penalty comes as a result of six Chelsea players receiving yellow cards during the feisty encounter.
The game saw a series of bookings, starting with Moisés Caicedo’s yellow card in the 21st minute for a foul on Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White. Nottingham Forest’s James Ward-Prowse was booked in the 36th minute for a foul on Cole Palmer.
Forest took the lead early in the second half when Chris Wood capitalised on a header from Nikola Milenkovic to score in the 49th minute. Chelsea responded eight minutes later, with Noni Madueke netting the equaliser after being set up by Palmer.
Tensions flared late in the game, with Cole Palmer receiving a yellow card for dissent in the 75th minute. Nottingham Forest were reduced to ten men after James Ward-Prowse was sent off in the 78th minute following his second booking of the match.
Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Levi Colwill, along with Forest’s Neco Williams, were booked in the 89th minute after a scuffle. Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels was also booked for time-wasting in stoppage time, while Chelsea’s Pedro Neto and Wesley Fofana were shown yellow cards in the dying moments for fouls.
The FA’s fine marks Chelsea’s second disciplinary offence this season, after receiving eight yellow cards during their clash with Bournemouth on 14th September. That match saw Chelsea set a record for the most yellow cards in a Premier League game, with a total of 14 bookings issued by referee Anthony Taylor.
Chelsea now face further challenges ahead of their next fixture, with key defenders Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana both suspended for the upcoming match against Liverpool due to their bookings against Forest. Manager Enzo Maresca will need to adjust his line-up, with potential replacements for Fofana including Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, and Tosin Adarabioyo, while Ben Chilwell or new signing Renato Veiga could step in for Cucurella.
The Blues have endured a difficult start to the season, and with Liverpool currently top of the table, the absence of two key defenders will make their next game even more challenging. Maresca has hinted that the international break could be the perfect opportunity for further squad changes, with the likes of Romeo Lavia and Christopher Nkunku pushing for starting roles.
Chelsea will hope to return to winning ways after the draw with Nottingham Forest and avoid further disciplinary issues as they continue their Premier League campaign.
