Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O Kanayo has voiced his support for Nigerian music star Davido following the backlash over the singer’s recent comments on Nigeria’s economic state.
During his appearance on “The Big Homies House” podcast in the United States, Davido described the economic situation in Nigeria as dire, stating, “It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles.” He further advised Black Americans against relocating to Nigeria, sparking criticism from some quarters.
However, the remarks have since divided opinions, with some Nigerians demanding an apology from the Afrobeats star, accusing him of painting the country in a negative light.
Kanayo, however, defended Davido, arguing that the singer’s comments reflected the harsh realities faced by many Nigerians. In a video shared on his Instagram page, the actor emphasised that Davido’s statement was made in good faith and represented the struggles of the less privileged.
“Davido spoke his mind, didn’t he? Respect his views too. The Adeleke family can feed for life, but it would be unholy if they assumed all is well just because they are comfortable,” Kanayo said.
He dismissed calls for Davido to apologise, highlighting the importance of free speech. “Make una leave Davido alone over the comment he made. It is freedom of speech, and he made the statement in good faith. It is left for those in power to work harder to give us a better Nigeria.”
The actor also pointed out that Davido’s remarks were an attempt to advocate for Nigerians who are struggling to survive in the current economic climate. “Those who criticise us want the best out of us. Davido speaks for other Nigerians who cannot feed,” he added.
The actor’s support adds another layer to the ongoing debate about Davido’s statements, bringing attention to the broader conversation around Nigeria’s economic challenges and the responsibility of influential figures to speak out.
