EFCC Launches Cybercrime Rapid Response Centre

Nigeria’s anti corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a cybercrime rapid response centre called the E-C2R2.

The centre was launched on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 in Abuja by Mr Ola Olukoyede, the EFCC chairman during the National Cybercrime Summit organized by the EFCC.

“ It is my privilege to introduce to you the EFCC 247 cybercrime rapid response centre otherwise known as the E- C2R2 which will be launched here today. This centre represents a significant step forward in the fight against cybercrime in Nigeria.

“ In most recent year, the digital landscape in Nigeria has expanded rapidly and bringing unprecedented opportunity as well as new challenges. Without a doubt, cybercrime has emerged as a major threat to our Nations financial stability and social well being, the statistics are quite staggering as Nigeria reportedly loses 250 billion naira equivalent to 500 million dollars annually to cybercrime.

“This loses stem from various malicious activities including online fraud, fishing, identity theft, attacks on financial institutions in the country as well as the National IT infrastructure and in response to this growing threat, the commission in collaboration with the European union and international idea established the E-C2R2.

“ This centre is designed to serve as an incident response of attending to the general public in real time on complaints relating to cybercrime and cyber enabled crimes, the centre is established to receive complaints from all states across the Nigeria 6 geopolitical zones via dedicated call lines and email address.

“ We have also set up a special number for receiving complaints from outside the country in recognition of the global nature of this crime

He also stated that the centre primary goal is to significantly reduce the time between the incident report and their response to the report and the centre is prepared to tackle a wide range of cybercrime.
