President Bola Tinubu has extended his warm congratulations to the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, as he marks his 71st birthday on 20 October, a date which also commemorates the eighth anniversary of his ascension to the throne.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the Oba’s leadership, highlighting the positive impact he has made since his coronation as the 40th Oba of Benin in 2016. The President noted that Oba Ewuare II’s reign has ushered in a period of peace, mutual understanding, and civility among the people of the Benin Kingdom.
Reflecting on the monarch’s background in diplomacy, Tinubu commended the Oba’s distinguished career, which has included service as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Angola, Sweden, with accreditation to Norway, Denmark, and Finland, as well as a later posting to Italy. The President acknowledged that this experience has deeply influenced Oba Ewuare II’s leadership, enabling him to guide his people with wisdom and grace.
President Tinubu lauded the Oba’s steadfast commitment to preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of the Benin Kingdom, noting his tireless efforts to recover invaluable artefacts that symbolise the Kingdom’s rich history and identity. He described these cultural preservation initiatives as a source of pride for all who cherish the legacy of the Benin Kingdom.
“The Oba’s work in reclaiming priceless and timeless artefacts, which carry the weight of the Benin Kingdom’s history, identity, and nationality, reflects his love for his people,” Tinubu stated.
