Oluwole, also known as Maye, has filed a ₦5 billion lawsuit against gospel artist Sinach over her 2016 hit song Way Maker.
He claims co-ownership of the song, seeking damages for alleged rights infringements. He also requests an equitable share of all earnings from licenses and assignments, disclosure of all agreements, and compensation for his contributions as a studio engineer.
Oluwole alleges he created instrumental accompaniments, including piano and synthesizers, and that his performer’s rights were violated when Sinach released the song without his consent or payment. He accuses her of withholding proceeds from licenses and describes her actions as “oppressive.”
Sinach who is a celebrated gospel artist and also the first Nigerian to win Song of the Year at the GMA Dove Awards for Way Maker., is represented by lawyer Emeka Etiaba, denies these claims, stating she is the sole creator of Way Maker. She argues that Oluwole’s involvement was limited to mixing the track, for which he was paid $300, and maintains he has no claim to performer’s rights, royalties, or copyright.
The trial began on November 27, 2024, with arguments from the plaintiff, and was adjourned to January 29 and 30, 2025, to allow the defense to present its case.
