Ibom Air has imposed a lifetime ban on a passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, for violently assaulting a crew member and security personnel. The incident occurred Sunday, August 10 on a flight from Uyo to Lagos, just days after a widely publicized controversy involving musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM1, raised national questions about aviation safety and passenger conduct.
The confrontation reportedly began before takeoff in Uyo when Ms. Emmanson was instructed to switch off her mobile phone, a standard aviation safety protocol. According to a statement from the airline, she refused to comply until the Pilot-in-Command made a general announcement to the cabin.
Upon the flight’s arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Ms. Emmanson allegedly waited for other passengers to disembark before confronting the flight purser. The airline stated that the passenger stepped on the crew member, forcibly tore off her wig, and assaulted her with footwear. When another cabin crew member intervened, she was also slapped.
The situation escalated when Ms. Emmanson attempted to forcibly remove a fire extinguisher to use as a weapon, an act the airline said could have damaged the aircraft. Airport security personnel were called to the scene, and the passenger was restrained, removed from the aircraft, and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.
Ibom Air confirmed it has submitted a report to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards unruly conduct. The airline’s decisive action to permanently ban the passenger comes as aviation authorities and the public are still debating the appropriate response to the recent incident where KWAM1 was accused of disrupting flight operations in Abuja.
