Former Senator for Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, suggesting it’s appetite for loans might soon lead it to seek funds from local financial technology companies like Opay and Moniepoint.
Dino Melaye, during an interview on ARISE Television on Monday, accused the government of borrowing money recklessly while failing to alleviate the hardship Nigerians are facing. He questioned the administration’s financial decisions, asking, “Why is the president borrowing $1.7 billion from the World Bank? Why has the senate approved $21 billion?”
The former lawmaker described the current government as one of the “most reckless in the history of Nigeria,” pointing to what he termed needless spending amid a national economic crisis. Melaye specifically criticized the purchase of a presidential yacht, stating, “That yacht he bought has never been to the perimeters, the territorial areas of Nigeria. Instead, it’s been between Monaco and Paris. And what do we need a yacht for in a time of pervasive hunger?”
He further argued that the rate of borrowing was too high . “He has borrowed like no other president in the history of the country, ” Melaye stated, adding, “We will not be surprised if the president starts borrowing from Opay and Moniepoint very soon.”
