A coroner in Lagos, Magistrate T.A. Shotobi, has given the management of Ikorodu General Hospital a seven-day deadline to produce all necessary documents related to the case of Onifade Pelumi, a journalist killed during the #EndSARS protest in 2020.
The order was issued on Monday during the ongoing coroner’s inquest into the death of the 20-year-old journalist. The directive was given because the hospital had failed to provide the required documents, which has stalled proceedings.
The inquest is aimed at uncovering the circumstances that led to the death of Pelumi, who was a reporter for Gboah TV. He was reportedly arrested by officers of the Lagos State Task Force on October 24, 2020, while covering the unrest at the Ministry of Agriculture, Abattoir, in the Agege area of the state.
His body was later discovered at the Ikorodu General Hospital’s morgue. The current inquest was initiated following a court order that compelled the Lagos State Government to investigate the killing.
The family of the deceased journalist is being represented in the matter by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN). The documents from the hospital are considered crucial for the inquest to proceed and determine the cause of death.
