The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics confirms after conducting a survey has reported that 67.8 percent of households now uses fuel wood either for domestic, agricultural, commercial, cultural or religious purpose after an incessant surge in the prices of gas.
According to the report titled “The 2024 Nigeria Residential Energy Demand-Side Survey (NREDSS)” which was released yesterday , 19.4 percent of Households used the liquified petroleum gas , 40.7 percent of Households purchased fuelwood for production of charcoal , 21.6 percent purchased charcoal, in the last 30 days.
However , the NBS has recommended that the government should provide incentives and training programmes for farmers , communities and other major stakeholders to be aware of deforestation and the benefits of reforestation.
It can be recalled how flood has damaged several farmlands and properties in Nigeria presently, a call for planting trees to curb erosion has been made but unfortunately Nigerians have to resort to the woods as an alternative to gas due to incessant hikes in the cost and the claws of the economy on the skin of the common man.
