The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard routes.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, noting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the adjustment following appeals from regulated public transport operators.
According to LAMATA, the operators raised concerns over the sustainability of transit operations amid rising operational costs.
The agency said the new fare structure will take effect from March 2, 2026.
LAMATA explained that the review aligns with the state’s previously approved annual fare review mechanism. It added that the decision was influenced by prevailing economic conditions, including inflationary trends.
Nigeria’s inflation rate closed 2025 at 15.2 per cent, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
The statement, signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, noted that Bus Operating Companies have faced increased expenses related to vehicle maintenance, spare parts and staff salaries, particularly after the implementation of the new national minimum wage.
It added that operators are also investing in new and more fuel-efficient buses to improve service delivery and enhance environmental sustainability.
The state government assured commuters of its commitment to maintaining safe, reliable and efficient public transportation while balancing affordability.
