In a landmark announcement at the Governor’s House in Marina, Lagos, on Tuesday, 5th November 2024, renowned theatre producer and director Bolanle Austen-Peters launched the Lagos International Theatre Festival, set to take place from 14th to 17th November 2024.
The theatre themed “Culture Unmasked,” will bring together global performers in a celebration of theatre and culture across four strategic locations in Lagos.
Austen-Peters, founder of Terra Kulture, shared that her decision to establish the festival was motivated by her 22 years of experience in Nigeria’s theatre industry and a strong commitment to developing local talent. “I didn’t want to do this festival,” she said, “but I recognised that as a front-liner with Terra Kulture, 22 years later, creating jobs and opportunities with an academy that has trained over 24,000 young people, I had no choice but to do it.”
Supported by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the festival aims to position Lagos as a premier theatrical destination. “We will make this the best theatre location in West Africa, in Africa, and the world,” Austen-Peters stated, emphasising the transformative role of theatre in shaping societies and building communities.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who hosted the press conference, expressed his administration’s commitment to the initiative, noting its alignment with Lagos’s economic master plan. He highlighted the festival’s importance within the broader state strategy to establish Lagos as a cultural and creative centre, with entertainment and tourism driving economic development.
Terra Kulture’s record of excellence, including training over 24,000 young creatives and creating significant employment opportunities, provides a strong foundation for the festival’s ambitions. The academy’s success in cultivating local talent and upholding international standards underscores the festival’s goal of transforming Lagos into a global theatrical hub.
The Lagos International Theatre Festival is poised to not only spotlight Nigerian theatre talent but also foster cross-cultural connections and promote Lagos as a dynamic centre for creativity.
