President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lifted the state of emergency earlier declared in Rivers State, restoring full constitutional powers to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly.
The decision, announced on Thursday, follows weeks of political tension and uncertainty in the oil-rich state. The state of emergency was imposed after a prolonged political crisis between opposing factions within the government escalated, threatening governance and public order.
With the new directive, Governor Fubara is expected to resume his full executive functions, while the State Assembly will also return to its legislative duties. The move has been described as a significant step towards restoring peace, stability, and democratic order in the state.
Presidential aides disclosed that Tinubu’s intervention was part of his administration’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that constitutional institutions are not undermined by political unrest.
Political analysts have, however, called for genuine reconciliation among all factions in Rivers State to prevent a relapse into crisis.
