The six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, has officially lapsed, paving the way for her return to the National Assembly.
Her legal counsel, Victor Giwa, confirmed that the senator will resume her legislative duties once the Senate reconvenes on September 23.
Speaking in Abuja, Giwa revealed that Akpoti-Uduaghan is currently on vacation in London but has made all necessary arrangements to be back in Nigeria before plenary resumes.
“She’s fully prepared to return to her seat at the Senate. The six-month suspension has run its course, and there’s nothing stopping her from resuming. She’s presently in London, but she’ll be back before the next sitting,” Giwa stated.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended earlier this year following allegations of insubordination after she declined to accept a reassignment of her designated seat on the Senate floor.
The suspension, which was based on a recommendation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, also resulted in the withdrawal of her aides, office space, and salaries.
Throughout the suspension period, Akpoti-Uduaghan maintained that her punishment was politically motivated and linked to her earlier sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio—a claim the Senate leadership has strongly denied.
In July, the senator attempted to return to the chamber after securing a court ruling which, according to her, favored her reinstatement. However, security operatives blocked her entry, leading to a tense standoff while a large group of her supporters protested outside the National Assembly complex.
Despite the earlier confrontations, Giwa expressed optimism about a smooth return this time.
“We’ve been informed that the Senate leadership is ready to receive her without any resistance. There are no obstacles in sight,” he assured, adding that any pending legal matters would eventually be resolved.
With her return, Akpoti-Uduaghan is expected to immediately resume her legislative responsibilities and continue representing the people of Kogi Central.
