A massive fire outbreak ravaged Mandilas Market, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The incident occurred when flames engulfed Emab Plaza, a four-storey building behind Mandilas, around 9 pm.
The blaze broke out on the fourth floor and quickly spread to neighbouring apartments.According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the fire started from a faulty changeover switch in one of the buildings before spreading rapidly to adjoining structures.
NEMA provided an update on the incident in a statement on its X account on Thursday, stating, “The presence of highly flammable materials such as clothing, footwear, and plastics in the market contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
“The consequences of the fire were severe, with NEMA confirming that “Four buildings housing approximately 200 shops were completely destroyed in the incident. One individual sustained injuries from smoke inhalation and is currently receiving medical attention at a nearby health facility.
“Emergency responders sprang into action, with the Federal and Lagos State Fire Services, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other stakeholders battling the blaze through the night. NEMA praised their efforts, stating, “The combined efforts of all emergency responders ensured the eventual containment and complete extinguishing of the fire.
“The agency also highlighted the crucial role played by the Nigeria Police Force in securing the area, cordoning off the affected site, and preventing possible vandalism or looting. As NEMA noted, “The Nigeria Police Force was on ground to secure the area, cordon off the affected site, and prevent possible vandalism or looting.”In the aftermath of the fire, NEMA’s Lagos Operations Office is working with stakeholders to assist affected traders and promote safety awareness in densely populated commercial areas. The agency’s efforts aim to mitigate the impact of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
