The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that a total of 2,802,790 voters are on the register for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025.
The figure was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
According to him, the commission conducted a voter registration exercise across the 326 wards in the state from July 8 to 20, 2025, during which 168,187 citizens applied as new voters.
In line with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, the list of new registrants was displayed for one week to allow for claims and objections. The data was then subjected to the Automated Biometric Identification System, which detected and removed 27,817 cases of duplicate or multiple registration.
Following the cleanup, the valid number of new registrants stood at 140,370. INEC also approved 5,983 transfer applications into the state, bringing the total additional voters to 146,353.
“Before this exercise, Anambra State had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the additions, the register has now increased to 2,802,790,” Olumekun said.
Providing further details, he noted that Idemili North has the highest number of voters with 246,318 (8.79 percent), followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73 percent) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71 percent). Dunukofia and Anambra West have the lowest figures with 83,580 (2.98 percent) and 71,332 (2.55 percent), respectively.
Olumekun assured that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for new registrants, as well as those who applied for transfers or replacements, would be ready for collection ahead of the election.
The Anambra governorship election is one of several off-cycle polls arising from court-ordered adjustments to the electoral calendar.
INEC has already released the final list of candidates and confirmed that campaigns have officially commenced. Sixteen political parties met the submission deadline of May 12, 2025, and will field candidates in the November 8 poll.
