The Federal Government has warned that nine northern states and 15 communities face the risk of heavy rainfall and possible flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.
The alert was issued on Monday by the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment, in a statement signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department.
States and Communities at Risk
According to the advisory, the affected locations include:
Adamawa State: Abba-Kumbo, Mubi, Shellen
Bauchi State: Azare, Jama’a
Borno State: Ngala
Gombe State: Nafada
Jigawa State: Gwaram
Kano State: Sumail
Katsina State: Bindawa, Kaita, Katsina
Sokoto State: Makira
Zamfara State: Anka
The ministry further advised residents of communities along the River Niger floodplain, stretching from Jebba to Lokoja, to evacuate immediately as water levels continue to rise.
“Due to the rise in the water level of River Niger, communities on the flood plain from Jebba to Lokoja are advised to evacuate,” Bokani warned.
The warning follows recent predictions of flooding in seven other states and 25 locations nationwide. Already, Yobe State has been hit hard, with 102 households affected and 612 residents displaced in Potiskum Local Government Area. Women and children accounted for most of the displaced, according to the State Emergency Management Agency.
The worst-hit communities in Yobe include Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Jigawa, and Makarahuta.
