The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has extended his congratulations to two of the Commission’s top legal professionals, Abba Mohammed and Ekele Iheanacho, following their elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Mohammed serves as the Special Adviser and Head of the Chairman’s Legal Team, while Iheanacho holds the position of Head, Special Duties 2.
The two lawyers were among the 87 legal practitioners inducted into the esteemed rank of SAN at the Supreme Court on Monday, 30 September 2024. The induction ceremony was presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
Speaking at a reception held in Abuja to celebrate the honourees, Olukoyede praised their accomplishments and highlighted the Commission’s growing influence within the legal profession, noting that over five Senior Advocates of Nigeria have passed through the EFCC. He urged the newly elevated SANs to uphold the values of integrity and responsibility as they advance in their careers.
“As you rise in life, greater responsibilities will follow. People may attempt to induce you with offers, but always remember who you are and what you stand for. You are men of integrity. No government agency compares to the EFCC in terms of the work we do. Our conviction figures surpass those of other agencies. I am delighted that we had two elevations this year, and I hope to see that number double next year. I encourage all qualified prosecutors to apply for SAN status, and we will support you,” Olukoyede said.
Osita Okechukwu, former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria and Chairman of the occasion, emphasised that the elevation to SAN was a call to serve the nation. He urged the celebrants to stay focused on their duties, reminding them that Nigerians expect much from them.
EFCC’s Director of Legal and Prosecution, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir, SAN, also praised the new Senior Advocates, encouraging them to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and uphold the ethics of the profession while diligently serving the country and the Commission.
The reception was marked by several goodwill messages from colleagues and dignitaries, including Deputy Director of the Commission, Kabir Latona, members of the Detective Superintendent Course 3, senior members of the Inner Bar, and former classmates from the Law School. The event was attended by prominent figures such as former Acting EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu, Chairman of the House Committee on Financial Crimes, Ginger Onwusibe, royal dignitaries, EFCC Directors, and family members.
The elevation of the 87 legal practitioners to the rank of SAN was approved by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) during its 164th plenary session held on 1 August 2024.
