The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the 2025 results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates. Students can now access their results online via www.waecdirect.org.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the WAEC National Office in Yaba, Lagos, the Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, described the conduct of the exam as a “huge success” despite a few challenges encountered during the process.
Out of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the examination across 23,554 schools, only 754,545 candidates — representing 38.32% — obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
This marks a significant drop from the 72.12% recorded in 2024 — a decline of over 33% in core subject pass rates.
Dr. Dangut attributed the sharp drop in performance to new anti-malpractice measures implemented this year. For the first time, WAEC introduced serialised objective questions in key subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Biology, and Economics, ensuring no two candidates received the same question format.
“This made cheating much harder,” Dr. Dangut noted.
“We observed weaker performance in the objective sections, but essay responses remained consistent with previous years. It’s a clear sign that students need to focus on genuine preparation rather than shortcuts.”
