The number of fatalities from the collapse of a three-storey building in Yaba, Lagos State, has risen to four.
The Acting Head of the Lagos Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Ibitayo Adenike, confirmed the development on Sunday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to her, another male body was pulled from the rubble on Sunday evening, bringing the total casualty figure to eight—four confirmed dead and four rescued alive.
The incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday when the building, located at No. 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, caved in, trapping several occupants beneath the debris.
“Search and rescue operations are still ongoing,” Adenike stated.
Emergency agencies at the site include the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant responders.
The collapse adds to the growing concerns over building integrity in Lagos, where regulatory authorities have repeatedly warned against substandard construction practices.
