President Bola Tinubu’s administration has announced a new primary school curriculum set to begin in January 2025, requiring pupils to learn at least two vocational skills, including plumbing, phone repairing, and hairstyling.
This was disclosed in a statement by the president’s special assistant on social media, Dada Olusegun.
The new subjects will be part of the Vocational and Entrepreneurship Studies framework, designed to expose students to various trades.
Under the construction sector, skills such as plumbing, tiling, flooring, and POP installation will be taught. In the hospitality sector, students will learn event decoration and management, among others.
Service sector skills, including GSM repair, CCTV installation, and solar photovoltaic installation, will also be introduced. In agriculture, pupils will learn crop production, beekeeping, horticulture, sheep and goat farming, as well as poultry and rabbit farming.
Additionally, digital literacy will be incorporated as a core subject alongside the vocational training, covering areas like IT and robotics.
The administration emphasized that the curriculum aims to ensure that every child learns at least two skills before adulthood, as part of efforts to address unemployment in the country. It aligns with ongoing initiatives such as the SUPA, 3MTT, and NATEP programs, which focus on skill acquisition for the general populace.
