The Federal Government has inaugurated a committee to investigate the recent explosion at the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) complex in Kaduna State.
The Managing Director of Beacon Security and Intelligence Ltd., and former Head of Security at the Senate, Kabir Adamu, confirmed the development on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s programme, The Morning Brief.
The explosion, which occurred on Saturday at DICON’s factory in the Kurmin Gwari area of Kaduna metropolis, claimed the lives of two workers, including a military officer, and left four others injured.
According to DICON’s Public Relations Officer, Maria Sambo, the incident happened during the final phase of a controlled destruction of expired explosives and hazardous materials. Items involved included large quantities of ammonium nitrate, primer caps, and propellants.
She assured the public that there was no cause for panic, emphasizing that the situation had been contained.
The federal committee, which is expected to comprise security and safety experts, will investigate the circumstances leading to the explosion, assess compliance with standard operating procedures, and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
The Defence Industries Corporation, established in 1964, is Nigeria’s premier defense production facility, responsible for the manufacture and disposal of military hardware and ammunition.
