The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has assured Nigerians that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are safe for human health and the environment.
Director-General of the agency, Abdullahi Mustapha, said in a statement on Monday that fears around GMOs are largely fueled by misinformation. He stressed that the agency prioritises the well-being of Nigerians and would never compromise public health in the name of innovation.
Mustapha explained that all GMO products in Nigeria undergo strict approval processes by the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), which conducts thorough risk assessments before they are released.
He added that GMOs have been researched globally for decades and are regulated under rigorous international standards.
According to him, the NBRDA is stepping up public engagement through training, outreach, and community demonstrations to counter misinformation and build confidence in biotechnology.
