The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has announced a ban on all social activities on campus that extend beyond 6:00 p.m., following the tragic death of a guest during a student-organised event.
This directive was made public in a statement issued by Mr. Inya Egwu, the Acting Public Relations Officer of the university. According to the statement, the restriction was prompted by the unfortunate incident that occurred on September 12.
NAN reports that a businessman, Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, was stabbed to death during a bonfire night organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies’ student association.
In response, the university stated that going forward, all social activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the institution’s security unit.
“Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m. henceforth,” the statement read.
The management further explained that the bonfire night had been hijacked by miscreants from a nearby community, leading to the violence that claimed Nweze’s life.
UNN reassured the university community and the public of its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure campus environment, pledging to implement all necessary measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
