The Lagos State Government has apologized to residents of the Ijede community in Ikorodu after severe flooding affected the area between Sunday, August 3rd, and Monday, August 4th, 2025.
Following hours of heavy rainfall, several homes, streets, and vehicles in the area were submerged, leaving many people stranded. Videos of the incident have been making rounds on social media, showing the extent of the damage.
In response, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said a contractor has already been instructed to begin excavation work to help channel the floodwater toward its discharge point.
While this is only a temporary measure, Wahab explained that a major drainage project approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is currently underway and will serve as a permanent solution once completed.
We’ve seen the videos and understand how upsetting the situation is,” Wahab said. “We’re moving quickly. Excavation has been ordered immediately, and culvert construction will be prioritized. Once that’s stable, we’ll continue with concrete lining as part of the full project plan.”
He also reassured residents that the inconvenience is temporary, adding, “We truly apologize for what people are going through right now, but this is just a step toward a permanent fix that will significantly improve conditions in the area.”
According to Wahab, the government is fully committed to building long-lasting infrastructure that will serve the people better in the future.
