Stop Using IGP Name to Intimidate Others, It Undermines Integrity – Police Force Says as They Launch Investigation into Abia Rep’s Alleged Assault on Bolt Driver

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a warning against the misuse of the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) authority to intimidate others, stating that such actions undermine the integrity of the institution.

This statement comes as the police launch an investigation into an assault by an Abia State House of Representatives member Alex Mascot Ikwechegh on a Bolt driver.

On Sunday night, the incident occurred involving a bolt driver and Hon. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, a serving member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency. The driver requested that Ikwechegh receive an order he placed for snail at the gate, as he refused to enter the premises for the delivery. This action was perceived negatively by Ikwechegh.

Alex says he will make the victims disappear using the title of the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) to threaten the victim saying he will make the driver disappear with no consequences and won’t need his guys to beat him up but will deal with the driver himself. The member of the House of Representatives then gave the driver two slaps.

Nigeria Police Force PRO Muyiwa Adejobi through official X Npf account condemned the incident and said, “The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the incident between a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, which took place on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja.”

“The FCT Command is actively handling the case following Mr. Abuwatseya’s official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters. The Police Force also urges the public to refrain from using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others, as such actions undermine the values of impartiality that the IGP’s office upholds,” Adejobi added.

Many Nigerians on social media platforms, including X (formerly known as Twitter), have expressed concerns that the situation in Nigeria may not improve if lawmakers and representatives in the house are involved in assaults against citizens.

Recall that Timely Publishers had earlier reported that Abia house of rep member assaulted a bolt driver due to anger and he is been put on record.
