Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has sparked controversy after openly criticising modern feminism, describing it as a “crime” and a “two-faced movement” during a recent interview that is now making waves on social media.
Speaking on a talk show appearance earlier this week, Iyke did not hold back his views on what he termed the “distorted evolution” of feminism in today’s society. According to the 48-year-old actor, while the original ideals of feminism equality, empowerment, and justice were noble, the movement has in recent years lost its true purpose.
“Feminism, the way it started, was necessary and empowering,” Iyke said. “But what it has become today is a crime against reason. It’s no longer about equality, it’s about superiority cloaked in victimhood. It’s a two-faced movement now.”
His comments have drawn both support and backlash online. Some social media users applauded Iyke for voicing what they see as a growing concern, while many others criticised him for promoting a narrow and damaging view of feminism.
Prominent Nigerian feminist and writer, Jumoke Balogun, responded on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Calling feminism a ‘crime’ is not just irresponsible, it’s dangerous. Men like Jim Iyke need to understand that equality doesn’t mean oppression.”
Iyke, who is no stranger to controversy, has yet to issue a follow-up statement or clarify his remarks. However, insiders close to the actor claim he stands by his words and is prepared for any backlash.
This latest development adds to the ongoing debate in Nigeria and beyond about the true nature and direction of feminism in the 21st century and who gets to define it.
