A fresh wave of political tension has surged across Nigeria following the detention of Omoyele Sowore, the prominent human rights activist and convener of the Take It Back movement. His arrest has ignited uproar among supporters, who are now threatening nationwide protests to challenge what they label a politically motivated crackdown on dissent.
Sowore was taken into custody on August 6 after responding to a police summons by the Inspector-General of Police. Authorities allege he is involved in forgery and inciting disturbances, but activists argue these charges are vague and designed to stifle criticism. Reportedly, police withheld crucial information—including the content of the petition against him and the identity of the petitioner—before detaining him.
Leading human rights organisations—including Amnesty International—and a cadre of Nigerian lawyers have condemned Sowore’s detention as arbitrary and politically motivated. Amnesty termed the arrest a blatant violation of his rights and echoed calls for his immediate and unconditional release, pointing to his long-standing role as a vocal defender of free expression.
In response, the Take It Back movement, under the leadership of Sowore’s National Coordinator Juwon Sanyaolu, has announced plans to launch nationwide protests. Supporters accuse the government of weaponizing state institutions to quash dissent and have vowed to mobilize civil society, activists, and concerned citizens across Nigeria.
