The Federal Government has announced the approval of ₦200 billion for the urgent rehabilitation and maintenance of major highways across Nigeria. The decision was disclosed on Monday by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a press briefing.
According to the Minister, the intervention will cover over 200 critical road sections spread across all six geopolitical zones. Priority will be given to highways that play a central role in the movement of agricultural produce, facilitate inter-state trade, and connect key economic hubs. Umahi noted that poor road conditions have been a major contributor to post-harvest losses, higher transport costs, and frequent accidents, stressing that the government is determined to address these challenges.
“The President has directed that we focus on roads that directly impact the daily lives of Nigerians and the economy. This intervention will not only improve travel experience but will also stimulate local economic activities in the affected areas,” Umahi said.
The Minister explained that reputable contractors have been mobilised to sites and are expected to complete the projects before the end of the year. He added that the Ministry would adopt stricter monitoring measures to ensure compliance with standards and timelines.
He further warned that contractors who fail to deliver quality work or meet agreed deadlines will face sanctions, including contract termination and blacklisting from future federal projects.
In addition to road repairs, the Ministry of Works is collaborating with security agencies to ensure that construction materials are safeguarded and that construction zones are well-managed to prevent traffic congestion and accidents.
