The Nigerian Red Cross Society (Lagos branch), in collaboration with key emergency response agencies, on Monday conducted a flood simulation exercise in the Agboyi 1 community of Kosofe Local Government Area, Lagos State.
Agencies that participated include the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), the Nigerian Navy, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Office of Drainage Services, and the Nigeria Police.
The exercise was carried out under the Italian Government–funded Flood Resilience Project, which targets six flood-prone states across Nigeria: Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Enugu, Lagos, and Nasarawa.
Chairman of the Lagos branch of the Red Cross, Dr. Adebola Kolawole, said the exercise would enable residents to respond swiftly during flooding, stressing the importance of knowing who to alert and how to mobilize help.
Assistant Director of Search and Rescue at NEMA Lagos, Adenike Ibitayo, added that the initiative was designed to strengthen inter-agency coordination and improve emergency response capacity.
The Agboyi 1 community, which has been prone to severe flooding in the past, also received sensitization on proper waste disposal and drainage clearance to reduce the risk of disasters.
