The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the nominees for the 2024 Player of the Year (Men’s category).
Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong are among the ten players shortlisted, while notable names like Victor Boniface and Mohamed Salah missed out.
Other players on the list include Algeria’s Amine Gouiri, Burkina Faso’s Edmond Tapsoba, Côte d’Ivoire’s Simon Adingra, DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Soufiane Rahimi, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams.
Achraf Hakimi, a finalist last year, was once again nominated for his exceptional defensive performances during the 2024 AFCON, alongside other players recognized for their impressive displays for both club and country.
The absence of players like Victor Boniface and Mohamed Salah has sparked discussion among fans and pundits. Both players had standout seasons with their respective clubs but were left off the list due to their lack of participation in the 2024 AFCON.
Boniface missed the tournament due to injury, and Salah’s campaign was similarly affected, limiting their chances of being nominated despite their club performances.
The CAF Player of the Year Awards will be held later this year, celebrating the best talent in African football.
