The planned fuel distribution by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery using 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks could not commence on Friday due to logistics challenges in China, The PUNCH has learnt.
The $20bn Lekki-based refinery had earlier announced that it would begin direct fuel distribution across Nigeria with the CNG-powered trucks, which were ordered from China. The initiative was expected to ease transportation and ensure smoother delivery of products from the refinery.
However, the plan suffered a setback as only 450 trucks have so far arrived in Lagos. According to findings, an additional 150 trucks are expected next week, bringing the total to 600 units.
A senior executive of the Dangote Group, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed the development. The official explained that the delay was due to a shortage of vessels to transport the trucks from China.
“The challenge is not from the manufacturers; the trucks are ready. The problem is with shipping. There are currently not enough vessels available to move all the trucks at once,” the source said.
Despite the setback, the company remains optimistic that the remaining 3,400 trucks will arrive in batches in the coming weeks as shipping schedules improve.
