The Africa Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Cancer Consortium (AHPBCC) is set to collaborate with the Federal Government to establish Nigeria’s first liver transplant center.
This landmark project aims to meet the growing need for specialized healthcare services for patients with liver cancer and end-stage liver disease.
Dr. Abidemi Omonisi, the AHPBCC Team Lead in Nigeria, highlighted the urgency of this initiative, noting that many Nigerians currently seek costly treatments abroad due to the absence of such facilities in the country. “Nigerians with liver cancer and other liver conditions are forced to travel overseas for care, often at an enormous financial cost,” Dr. Omonisi said. “This initiative is crucial to reversing this trend and alleviating the burden on citizens.”
The proposed plan includes establishing liver transplant centers across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, ensuring wider access to these life-saving treatments. The project will combine AHPBCC’s expertise in hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer research with the support of the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN) and backing from the Federal Government.
Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, President of SOGHIN, expressed strong support for the initiative, calling it long overdue. “This partnership has the potential to revolutionize healthcare in Nigeria, providing much-needed hope for patients and families affected by liver diseases,” he stated.
