In a bid to promote public health and early disease detection, the Lagos State Government has launched a free health check-up program targeted at market women across the state.
The initiative, flagged off at the popular Mile 12 Market on Monday, is part of the “Healthy Women, Strong Economy” campaign championed by the Ministry of Health.
Over 500 women received free medical screenings including blood pressure checks, malaria testing, blood sugar monitoring, and breast examinations.Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abimbola Adetokunbo, emphasized the importance of reaching women who often prioritize work over personal health.
“These women are the backbone of our local economy, and their health is critical. We want to ensure they are medically fit and aware of any health risks early,” he said.Many market women expressed gratitude.
Madam Christiana Adeyemi, a 52-year-old trader, said, “This is the first time I’m checking my blood pressure. I’m very happy they brought the hospital to us.
“The state government plans to extend the program to markets in Badagry, Ikorodu, and Epe in the coming weeks. The initiative is seen as a proactive step towards grassroots health awareness and is expected to reach over 10,000 women before the end of the year.
