In a major effort to improve public health, the Lagos State Government has launched a free health screening program targeting over 50,000 residents across all 20 local government areas.
The initiative, which began this week, is part of the state’s broader *”Healthy Lagos” campaign aimed at early detection of chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and hepatitis.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi said the screening is focused on low-income communities that often lack access to basic health checks.
Mobile clinics have been dispatched to major markets, motor parks, and community centers, providing free consultations, lab tests, and medications.
“We are prioritizing prevention over cure,” Abayomi said.
“This program is to ensure early diagnosis, promote healthy living, and reduce pressure on our hospitals.”Residents have praised the program.
Mrs. Iyabo Adeyemi, a trader in Oshodi, said, “This is the first time I’m checking my blood sugar and blood pressure. I’m grateful it didn’t cost me anything”.
The campaign will run for four weeks, after which selected patients requiring further treatment will be referred to government hospitals under a subsidized care plan.
Officials say the project aligns with the state’s 2025 health reform strategy and the goal to reach universal healthcare access by 2030.
More updates will follow as the screening moves to densely populated areas like Mushin, Alimosho, and Ikorodu in the coming days.
