Flooding has claimed at least 232 lives and displaced more than 121,000 people across Nigeria, according to figures from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
As of September 20, the disaster had also left 339,000 people with varying losses, 681 injured, and 115 declared missing. Over 42,000 houses and 48,000 hectares of farmland were destroyed.
Niger State recorded the highest fatalities with 163 deaths, followed by Adamawa with 59. Other states with casualties include Taraba, Yobe, Borno, Gombe, and Jigawa.
The worst-hit states include Lagos, where nearly 58,000 people were affected; Adamawa, with more than 23,000 displaced; and Akwa Ibom, which reported over 40,000 people rendered homeless. Imo, Taraba, Rivers, and Delta also recorded heavy damage to homes and farmland.
NEMA identified food, shelter, healthcare, and clean water as the most urgent needs, while citing shortages of resources and inaccessibility of flooded communities as the biggest obstacles to relief efforts.
In Gombe, officials confirmed 15 deaths and nearly 1,000 households displaced since the rainy season began. Sokoto authorities reported that September downpours destroyed more than 2,200 houses in Rabah Local Government, displacing over 5,300 families.
Kano and Bauchi states also reported extensive damage to homes and farmlands. Bauchi officials said the government had already spent about ₦500m on interventions for affected residents.
