In commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has released a message urging Nigerians to maintain hope, sustain their belief in the nation’s potential, and remain united.
In his statement, Jonathan emphasized the need for sober reflection despite current challenges.
The former President noted that the anniversary provides a crucial opportunity for Nigerians to evaluate their collective experience.
“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey to nationhood,” he stated. He added that the moment offers a chance “to reflect on our collective journey of nation-building; on the challenges we have faced, and on the vast possibilities that still lie ahead.”
Jonathan acknowledged the current difficulties facing the country, admitting that these problems are severe enough to dampen the national spirit.
“It is true that we face challenges that could test our sense of hope; insecurity, economic disparities and institutions that often struggle to deliver on the promises of improved wellbeing, peace and security.”
Despite recognizing these systemic issues, Jonathan passionately appealed to citizens not to give up on the Nigerian project.
“Yet, as citizens, we must not lose faith. We must continue to nurture hope and sustain belief in the nation’s enormous potential and the resilience of the people,” he urged.
The former President celebrated the nation’s innate assets, highlighting the wealth of the country’s natural and human resources. “Nigeria is a blessed nation, endowed with vast land, abundant natural resources, and, above all, the ingenuity and creativity of the people,” he affirmed.
He further pointed out that the distinct qualities of Nigerians continue to stand out globally, making a case for national pride.
“Our cultural richness, our knowledge, and our wisdom have continued to distinguish Nigerians across every sphere of human endeavor, both at home and abroad,” Jonathan remarked.
In conclusion, Jonathan urged all citizens to let love for the country guide their efforts toward a brighter future. “As we look to the future, let patriotism guide our actions. Let us hold firmly to optimism and faith, knowing that the greatness of our country is within reach if we remain united and steadfast,” he advised.
He ended with a powerful blessing for the nation’s continued growth, saying,
“May our nation continue to rise in strength and purpose.”
