The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, has launched an investigation into allegations of negligence following the death of Mrs. Charity Unachukwu, who passed away after a car accident.
Her sister, Phina Unachukwu Ezeagwu, had accused the hospital of gross negligence in a Facebook post, saying delays in admission, lab tests, and blood transfusion led to Charity’s death. She alleged that despite arriving at the hospital by midnight, her sister was not admitted until 3 a.m., while critical lab tests and treatment were repeatedly postponed.
“UNTH killed my sister with negligence of duty,” Phina wrote, describing the family’s ordeal as “heartbreaking.” She also criticised the hospital’s facilities and staff indifference.
Reacting on Sunday, UNTH’s Public Relations Officer, Uchelue Boniface, expressed the management’s condolences to the bereaved family and the public. He said the Chief Medical Director had cancelled an official trip abroad to personally oversee a transparent probe into the matter.
The hospital said the investigation would focus on emergency admissions, diagnostic services, and staff coordination, adding that any lapses confirmed would attract disciplinary action.
“We share in the family’s grief and are committed to systemic improvements to ensure safe and compassionate care,” the statement read.
