A two-storey building has collapsed on Amusu Street, in the Orile Iganmu area of Lagos State. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, causing panic among nearby residents who fled the area for safety.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that no casualties were reported in the incident. Mr Nosa Okunbor, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of LASEMA, stated that the building caved in on its own around 8:45 a.m.
In a statement, Okunbor said, “LASEMA Response Teams in Search and Rescue Operation is at a self-collapsed building on Amusu Street, Baale Bus Stop, Orile Iganmu. No casualties and updates to follow.”
An anonymous LASEMA official further confirmed to The Punch that the building had been evacuated before it collapsed, which prevented any injuries or loss of life. “I can confirm to you that the incident happened this morning but there were no casualties. An evacuation already took place before the collapse,” the official said. Emergency responders were promptly dispatched to the scene to assess and manage the situation.
A video circulating online captured the building as it collapsed, with residents nearby scrambling for safety. The footage has raised concerns about the structural integrity of buildings in the area.
This incident follows other recent building collapses in Lagos State. In May, a four-storey building collapsed on Lagos Island, trapping an unknown number of individuals at Iga Iduganran, near the Oba of Lagos’ palace. In July, residents narrowly escaped injury when a boys’ quarters behind a storey building collapsed at No. 49 Oyinlola Street, Iyana Ipaja.
Authorities in Lagos have continued to address the issue of building safety in the state, urging residents to report any structural concerns to prevent further incidents.
