Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has said women are not given due respect in the country’s music industry.
Speaking in a recent interview with the BBC, the Love Me Jeje crooner revealed that she struggled to be taken seriously at the start of her career because of her gender.
“People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry,” Tems said. She added that she is committed to changing how women perceive themselves in music through her new platform, The Leading Vibe Initiative.
According to her, the initiative will help women gain easier access to platforms, wider audiences, and greater success. Tems also urged aspiring female artists to clearly define their vision, brand, and boundaries.
“What are the things that you wouldn’t do for fame and the things that you would do?” she advised.
