The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to address outstanding welfare and labour issues or face industrial action.
The notice, which took effect on Monday, September 15, was contained in a joint statement signed by JAC Chairman and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, in Abuja.
The unions accused the government of failing to resolve long-standing issues despite several meetings with the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
The skewed disbursement of ₦50 billion earned allowances, which they said shortchanged university-based members and excluded those in inter-university centres.
Non-payment of two months’ withheld salaries. Outstanding arrears from the 25/35 per cent salary increment. Delays in renegotiating the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreements.
The statement recalled that during a meeting on July 4, 2025, it was agreed that a tripartite committee comprising representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and JAC would be set up to resolve the disputes.
However, the unions alleged that no meaningful progress had been made since then, despite reminders, including a follow-up letter dated August 18, 2025.
“It is on record that the Federal Government Team has already concluded renegotiation with our counterpart, ASUU, and is at the verge of signing an agreement, while the Non-Teaching Staff Unions have been sidelined despite fulfilling all requirements,” the statement said.
Expressing disappointment at what they described as the government’s “lack of responsiveness,” the unions warned that failure to meet their demands within seven days would lead to “a series of legitimate industrial actions, including strikes,” to press home their grievances.
