Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, has confirmed that he received the blessing of LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, before making the bold move to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement that has sparked conversations across political circles, Rhodes-Vivour said his defection was not done in secrecy or rebellion but with transparency and consultation. “I informed Peter Obi before I moved,” he said, adding that Obi gave his nod and encouraged him to pursue what he believed would be best for Lagos and Nigeria at large.
Rhodes-Vivour, who gained massive popularity during the 2023 gubernatorial race in Lagos, said his decision was driven by the need to align with a political platform that allows more freedom to push for real change especially in a state like Lagos, which he described as being “pocketed by one man.”
“We cannot build a democracy around one person or one godfather,” he said. “Lagos deserves better than recycled leadership and one-sided power.”
His switch to the ADC is seen by many as a strategic move, especially as the 2027 general elections begin to take shape. While some supporters expressed shock at the announcement, others have praised his transparency and continued commitment to progressive ideals.
Rhodes-Vivour emphasized that his mission remains unchanged: to challenge the status quo, speak truth to power, and offer a better future to the people of Lagos.
Political analysts suggest that this defection, along with the growing number of new political parties and movements, signals a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape one that could redefine alliances ahead of the next election cycle.
So far, neither Peter Obi nor the Labour Party leadership has publicly commented on the move.
