In a remarkable display of resilience and love for literature, a group of five Nigerians has completed a 431-hour reading marathon, aiming to set a new Guinness World Record.
The marathon, organized under the banner of Naija ReadFest, saw participants read aloud 79 books authored by Nigerian writers. The event, held at a restaurant in Lagos, attracted a steady stream of supporters both in person and online through live streaming.
According to the organizers, the initiative was designed not only to break the existing 365-hour record but also to promote literacy, celebrate Nigerian literature, and encourage a culture of reading among young people.
“This is beyond a record attempt. It is about showcasing the richness of our literature and inspiring Nigerians, especially students, to embrace reading,” one of the organizers said during the closing ceremony.
The atmosphere at the venue was festive, with book enthusiasts, cultural advocates, and community leaders cheering the readers on. Many described the feat as a testament to the endurance and creativity of Nigerians.
Guinness World Records has yet to confirm the outcome, but expectations are high that the achievement will be officially recognized in the coming weeks.
