Tension is mounting in Kaduna following reports that former governor Nasir El-Rufai and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have failed to honour invitations extended to them by the Nigeria Police Force.
The police had summoned the political leaders in connection with the recent outbreak of violence in parts of the state, which has led to loss of lives and property. Security operatives had hoped that El-Rufai and the ADC leaders would assist in clarifying issues surrounding inflammatory statements allegedly linked to the unrest.
However, sources within the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that both parties failed to show up at the scheduled meeting, raising concerns about their willingness to cooperate with ongoing investigations.
The Command’s spokesperson, while addressing journalists, expressed disappointment over the development. He reiterated that no individual, regardless of political status, is above the law, stressing that their input is crucial to restoring peace in the troubled areas.
Meanwhile, residents of Kaduna have continued to call for urgent intervention from security agencies and political leaders to forestall further bloodshed. Civil society groups have also urged politicians to avoid actions or utterances that could escalate tensions.
It remains unclear whether the police will issue a second invitation or take stronger steps to compel attendance, but analysts warn that the refusal of key stakeholders to cooperate could hinder peace efforts in the state.
