The Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) have celebrated Nigerian music icon, Sunday Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade (KSA), as he marked his 79th birthday.
Leaders of both associations, in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, praised the legendary juju musician for his immense contributions to African music and his lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
Pretty Okafor, the National President of PMAN, described King Sunny Ade as a living legend who has consistently promoted peace, unity, and cultural pride through his music.
“King Sunny Ade is a true legend who has lived his life with humility and grace. His dedication to music continues to inspire younger generations of artistes across Africa and beyond,” Okafor said.
He added that as a former president of PMAN, KSA has remained a pillar of support to the association and a role model for musicians through his hard work and exemplary character.
Abubakar Yakubu, National Secretary of AGN, also praised the music maestro, describing him as a beacon of professionalism and a global ambassador for African music.
“King Sunny Ade’s music transcends generations. His voice, soul, and passion have given the world timeless melodies and a rich piece of Nigerian history,” Yakubu said.
He urged upcoming artistes to draw inspiration from the singer’s remarkable journey, emphasizing the values of humility, dedication, and consistency in building a lasting career.
Born on September 22, 1946, in Ondo State, King Sunny Ade is one of Africa’s most influential musicians. A singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, he became one of the first African pop stars to achieve international recognition.
His 1980 album, Syncro System, earned him his first Grammy Award nomination in the ethnic/traditional folk category, making him the first Nigerian artist ever nominated for a Grammy.
Over the decades, King Sunny Ade has received numerous awards and honors. In 2016, he was inducted into the Hard Rock Café Hall of Fame, and in 2021, he was honored with an induction into The Headies Hall of Fame.
As tributes continue to pour in, both PMAN and AGN wished the music legend many more years of good health and happiness, describing his life and career as a guiding light for the Nigerian entertainment industry.
