A commercial tricycle operator lost his life while two passengers sustained serious injuries in a fatal crash on Egbe Bridge, Lagos, on Tuesday.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the accident involved a Toyota Venza (registration number GWA 659 RD) and a “Marwa” tricycle (registration number EPE 245 QM).
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Toyota Venza, approaching from the Ejigbo axis, attempted to overtake another vehicle on the bridge but veered into the path of an oncoming tricycle from the Ikotun end. The collision killed the tricycle rider instantly, while a male and a female passenger suffered multiple fractures.
LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said officials at the scene, assisted by the Ikotun Police Division, rescued the injured and transported them to the General Hospital, Isolo.
The driver of the Toyota Venza reportedly fled the scene, and police have launched a manhunt.
In a statement, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and wished the injured a swift recovery. He urged motorists to be patient and ensure the road is clear before overtaking, especially on bridges with restricted visibility.
“This tragic incident underscores the fatal consequences of impatience and traffic law violations,” Bakare-Oki warned. “Safe driving requires discipline, caution, and strict compliance with regulations to prevent needless loss of life.”
