The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the unauthorised use of its official uniforms and insignia by popular online personality, Martins Otse, known as “VDM.” The condemnation follows the release of a video by VDM on his social media platforms, in which he was seen wearing Police gear without permission.
In a statement, the Nigeria Police Force made it clear that it has no affiliation with the content or the actions depicted in the video. A comprehensive investigation has been launched to identify the source of the police uniforms used in the video and to ascertain under what authority they were accessed.
Furthermore,the Force emphasised the seriousness of such actions, reminding the public that the unauthorised use of police uniforms, insignia, or any official police accoutrements is a criminal offence. This is in accordance with Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, both of which prescribe stringent penalties for offenders.
The Nigeria Police acknowledged the importance of creativity within the content creation industry and expressed support for young Nigerians pursuing creative ventures. However, the statement stressed the need for boundaries, particularly when it comes to the misuse of symbols and uniforms associated with law enforcement.
“Such unauthorised use undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated,” the statement read. The Police called for greater respect for its uniforms and symbols, warning that actions which breach the law will be met with appropriate legal consequences.
As the investigation into the incident continues, the Nigeria Police has urged content creators and the general public to seek proper authorisation before featuring police gear in their work, to avoid legal repercussions.
