In anticipation of the peak of the rainy season, the Lagos State Government has commenced a large-scale drainage clearance operation across flood-prone areas of the city.
On Tuesday , officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources were seen clearing blocked drainages in Mushin, Surulere, and Agege, urging residents to stop dumping waste in canals and gutters.
According to the Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, the proactive step is aimed at reducing flash floods and protecting lives and properties. “We want to avoid what happened in past years where communities were submerged due to poor drainage maintenance,” he said.
Traders and residents in the affected areas praised the effort but called for consistent monitoring and stricter penalties for illegal dumping.
The operation is expected to cover all 57 LGAs and LCDAs in Lagos, with weekly updates promised by the ministry.
