The Lagos State Government has issued a stop-work order on an ongoing six-storey building project located at 28 Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, over safety breaches and threats to lives and property.
The structure, reportedly owned by a prominent traditional ruler in the South-West, had drawn complaints from residents and business owners in the area. They alleged that the construction activities were damaging surrounding buildings, vehicles, and posing risks to pedestrians.
Despite an earlier abatement notice, the contractors allegedly continued work on the site, prompting the Lagos State Safety Commission to intervene.
Speaking on the development, the Director-General of the commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, said investigations revealed that the contractors had failed to address the infractions and ignored invitations for a formal review.
“We have given the contractors 48 hours to report to the commission and immediately rectify all identified safety issues,” Mojola stated.
The government’s action comes on the heels of public outcry and reports highlighting the dangers posed by the project. Officials say the move is part of efforts to prevent potential tragedies and safeguard the lives and properties of Lagos residents.
