The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a group of secondary school students smoking and drinking inside what appears to be a hostel.
In the video, the teenagers were seen passing around a cigarette-like substance and taking turns to smoke.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, described the incident as “disturbing” and a violation of the values expected in Lagos schools.
“The state government views this incident with the utmost seriousness, as it goes against the core values and behavioural standards expected within the educational system of Lagos State,” Alli-Balogun said in a statement on Wednesday.
He added that the Office of Education Quality Assurance had been directed to investigate the clip. According to him, officials have been sent to confirm the authenticity of the video, identify the students involved,and assess the role of the school authorities.
“Preliminary engagements have begun with the school authorities to gather all relevant facts, and any school found culpable will face appropriate sanctions in line with Lagos State education policies and regulations,” the commissioner added.
Alli-Balogun stressed that the safety, well-being, and moral upbringing of students remain a priority for the government, assuring that measures would be taken to ensure schools remain safe and disciplined environments.
